Understead helps independent artists and small studios be found without requiring them to compete for visibility with large course marketplaces and institutions.
A class is more than a slot in a timetable.
It might be somebody teaching yoga in the village hall, a potter opening their studio twice a week, a dance teacher building a school from scratch, or a music teacher making a living one pupil at a time.
These are small pieces of the economy and culture of a place. They create work, skills, friendships, reasons to leave the house and reasons for a town to feel like itself.
These workshops keep practical skills alive locally and help makers earn from both what they produce and what they know.
The problem is that independent providers rarely have the advertising budgets, search authority or platform reach of the organisations competing for the same attention.
Understead is trying to change the balance by making the independent people already doing the work easier to find.
Find them here. Go directly to them. Help keep more of the life of your place rooted there.
Subjects and audiences are labelled from what each teacher explicitly advertises.

Find independent studios, artists and groups offering life drawing sessions locally, with venue, schedule and current price where published.
Many local teachers welcome people with no formal art training. Understead only labels a class beginner-friendly where the provider says so.
Drop-in sessions, one-off workshops and multi-week courses are priced differently, and materials may or may not be included: where providers state those details, they show separately rather than blended into one figure. Where a provider publishes current prices, Understead shows them on the listing.
Where possible, Understead shows the provider's own current price rather than sending you through a marketplace that obscures who is actually providing the class.
Art sits beside the other making categories: many independent teachers run sessions across more than one.
Understead is built around the places people live, so these listings focus on providers you can attend locally. Some local teachers also offer online sessions; where they do, you'll find that on their listing.
If you're one of the independent people doing this locally, Understead is meant to include you.
Add your business or claim the page we've already started. Show people nearby what you teach, where you run it, when it happens and how to reach you.
We want residents to find you because you're relevant to their place, not because you can afford to outspend somebody else.
Your own website, socials, contact details and booking routes stay visible.
Add or claim your business Why Understead is built for independents
Prices vary between drop-in sessions, workshops and course blocks, and by whether materials are included. Where a provider publishes current prices, Understead shows them on the listing.
Many local teachers explicitly welcome people with no art training at all. Look for classes the teacher describes as beginner-friendly: that label is never applied by assumption.
Some independent studios, artists and groups run regular life drawing sessions. Use the search above: providers who offer life drawing advertise it in their own class information.
It varies: some classes include all materials, others publish a list to bring. The provider's own listing or website states what's included.
There is probably more being taught around you than you realise.
Enter your town or postcode, choose how far you'd like to look, and find the independent people doing it nearby.
Know your place. Take part in it. Support the people who make it what it is.
