Made for you
Have something made by a local maker
Most people have never commissioned anything, and assume it is only for the wealthy. It is not: it is how you get the exact piece you want, made by a person you can talk to, at a price you agree together. A mug glazed to match your kitchen, a table that actually fits the alcove, a ring that means something.
How it works
- Find a maker whose work you love. The work is the interview: if you like what they make, you will probably like what they make for you.
- Describe what you want. A photo of something similar helps more than a thousand words.
- Agree the piece together: the brief, the budget, the timeline. Many makers sketch or model first.
- Expect a deposit, and expect it to take weeks to months. Good making is slow, and it is worth it.
A commission is a collaboration, not a checkout. We introduce you and step out: no fees, no cut, no middleman. The conversation, the agreement and the payment are between you and the maker.

Post what you want made
Describe the piece and it goes to local makers in that craft, nearest first. Makers who take work from further away see it too.
Quick answers
How much does a commission cost?
There is no price list: material, scale and complexity drive it, so the maker quotes after understanding what you want. Tell them your rough budget early; it helps them suggest what is possible at that scale rather than guessing.
How long does a commission take?
Usually weeks to months, depending on the piece and the maker's queue. A good maker will give you an honest timeline before you commit.
Do I pay a deposit?
Usually, yes. Many makers ask for a deposit before starting, often after agreeing a sketch or sample. That is normal and protects both of you.
Does Understead take a cut?
No. We introduce you and step out. No commission fees, no listing fees, and we never handle the money.
What if no maker near me does this?
Post what you want made anyway. Your ask is counted, makers see the demand when they decide to list here, and makers who take work from further away can still reply.
