Good local businesses aren’t vanishing because they stopped being good. They’re being squeezed out by a system built for chains and platforms. We’re building the thing that helps them compete.
The problem
Small businesses aren't failing. They're being designed out.
A coffee shop can pull better espresso than the chain that opens next door and still lose. The chain runs that corner at a loss for as long as it takes, waits for the independent to fold, then quietly raises its prices.
That is not a fair fight. It is a plan.
The online version is quieter and just as effective. Etsy and Amazon take a cut of every sale, keep the customer relationship for themselves, and turn the person who actually made the thing into inventory with a face.
None of it is an accident. It is the design.
The supermarket never stops absorbing what is left of the high street, one aisle and one trade at a time.
What we are building
Enough local producers, makers and growers gathered together that the range is finally worth your time. This part works today.
A single checkout across many local producers, so buying local is one order instead of seven. We are building toward this.
Independents pooled together, so they get the buying power, logistics and reach the big chains have always had. This is the direction.
Where we are
18,049
independent producers mapped across the UK
Every one of them keeps their own customers, takes payment directly, and pays us nothing on a sale.
We map the local economy. We do not tax it. There is no commission at any tier, and there never will be.
762local markets and food hubs listed
0%commission taken, at every tier
Local food shops support around three times the jobs of the main supermarkets for the same money through the till, and local food producers employ about half as many people again as the average farm.

Who is behind it
Ollie grew commercially for four years, aquaponics in Australia and microgreens in Spain.
Then we built Grow Sow Greener together, supplying seed and materials to commercial microgreen growers, and the same problem came back in every message and every order.
The growing was never the hard part. Being found was.
Lucy grew up in Loddiswell and lived in Salcombe. She knows the patch, and she's the one having the conversations with producers across South Devon, one at a time.
We heard the problem for years before we built anything about it. Understead is what we wished had existed, made for people still doing the work and still going unseen.
That's the whole reason it exists, and the reason it will never quietly start taking a cut.

How we are different
We never take a cut of a sale. Producers connect their own payment and keep every penny of what they earn.
Most platforms rent you access to your own audience. Everyone who follows a producer here chose them by name, and we stay out of the way.
You only ever appear where you genuinely match, the right kind of business, in the right place. Paid plans can order results you already belong in; they can never buy your way into ones you don't. Relevance is not for sale, to anyone.
We hold none of your money and put nothing between you and the people who buy from you. You are never trapped here.
What we believe
Small businesses are the backbone of a place, not a nostalgia act.
Local food and goods are usually better, and the miles are shorter.
Being found should never depend on the size of a marketing budget.
Technology should serve the people who make things, not extract from them.
Trade should run on trust between neighbours, not on an algorithm.
Everyone deserves good, local, honestly made things within reach.
Who it is for
Understead is for anyone making something good near where you live. If that is you, this is yours.

Keep in touch
A local paper for your patch, delivered by email. Who's just started up, what's in season, when the markets are on, what's on this month, and the odd story about how a place like yours keeps its money close to home.
Good news, mostly. There's enough of the other kind about.
For councils and organisations
If you work in a council, a food partnership, or a community organisation, Understead can map and connect your local independent economy in one place.
No cost to the businesses, no commission taken from a single sale, and no data locked away where you cannot reach it.
We would rather build this alongside the people already doing the work than around them.
Be part of it
We are two people who got tired of watching good local businesses get designed out, and decided to build the thing that helps them compete.
If you make, grow, bake or sell something good, come and find your people. If you buy from them, you are the reason they stay. It is early, and it is growing.
